Whilst his years of leading from the front row of a rugby scrum may be behind him, Derek Thomson continues to lead from the front, drawing upon decades of having “walked the walk” as well as “talked the talk”.

Capitalising upon an early opportunity to develop expertise in facilitation and coaching whilst also pursuing his career in operational line management, Derek now complements his past experience as an executive-level leader with fluency across a wide range of leadership development approaches and strategies to offer his clients a rare combination of qualities: an empathy for what it’s really like to be in senior leadership and the insight to help others get there, stay there, and flourish.

Lara Thomson

As Director of Finance and Administration, Lara Thomson is the unseen guiding hand behind Sonus Leadership. Lara’s background in financial services and experience in various leadership settings, including establishing her own interior design business, all combines to ensure Sonus is well run and building for the future.

Derek Thomson, Chartered FCIPD, is a Leadership Consultant and Executive Coach with over 30 years’ experience in leading and developing people.

Derek’s involvement in designing and delivering leadership development interventions stretches back to the early 1990s and includes:

  • creating and facilitating senior executive development programmes,
  • building and leading international organisation-wide corporate change initiatives, and
  • coaching and mentoring teams and individual leaders, from Board Directors to “high potentials”.

Derek’s experience includes leading executive level action learning projects and “in-market immersion” programmes across four continents and his clients over the last decade range from multi-sector global corporations and Government departments to small business, charities and private individuals, principally across the UK and Europe but also in the USA and Asia.

Prior to becoming an Executive Coach and Leadership Development Consultant back in 2007, Derek spent over 20 years in a global Corporation, holding senior and executive management positions in a diverse range of areas. Notably, Derek was, for six years, a member of the Global Executive Leadership team and led over 500 employees as Operations Director of an award-winning UK-based Client Service Business. Derek also served as a Non Executive Director of a multi-million turnover public sector Charitable Trust for 5 years, including 2 years as Chairman.

Derek was a Partner with Pivot Leadership LLC between 2013 and 2015, is a Fellow of the UK Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, holds a Diploma in Coaching and Mentoring and accreditations and experience in various assessment tools and instruments including the Hogan Assessment Suite and MBTI (Step 2). He is also a Certified HPI Corporate Athlete Facilitator.
